My road, Monday

Big respect to yesterday morning’s train driver who got on the tannoy and said:

Passengers alighting here for services to Peterborough should cross to Platform 6 and get the next train back home ‘cos it ain’t happening today.

Offboard brain

January 3, 2008

A thought, while wandering through Suffolk at the behest of my new satnav thingy. I reckon I’ve got a pretty strong sense of direction, and generally pay attention both to where I am and where I’m going. But since acquiring the satnav, I observe that I’m paying absolutely no attention to my surroundings. There goes another faculty outsourced to technology. I used to take a perverse pride in being able to remember phone numbers. But now I have no need to do so, and I’m sure that the ability will atrophy quickly.

Eventually all the hard stuff will be handled by the machines around us, and we’ll just sit blankly staring at whatever Tivo thinks we’re likely to be enjoying.

Happy holidays

December 21, 2007

Well, the office closes down in a few minutes, the Out Of Office message is ready, and so am I – going to skip happily off and spend the hols doing jigsaw puzzles with Son #1, talking improbable science with Son #2 and enjoying time with Wife #1 and #Only.

Have a nice break, y’all.

We’re all going on a summer holiday

No more posting for a week or two

Fun and laughter on a summer holiday

For me and….

Oh, sorry.

Gonna be a bright, bright sunshiney day

April 11, 2007

Has anyone researched a link between frequency of blogging and the weather? The sun is shining outside, and the urge to blog is not strong. Are these two facts linked? Discuss.

Difficult question

April 7, 2007

In restaurant, trying to explain social media to sceptical other half. “It would let you and your colleagues communicate with blogs and stuff”.

Pause.

“Can’t we just phone each other?”

IVCA update

March 31, 2007

Oops. Breaking basic blogging rules: don’t blog late, don’t blog drunk.

Anyway, just home after a pretty good night at the IVCA awards. We won four golds and a bunch of silvers and bronzes. Most significant to me was a silver in Effectiveness. Well done to Network Rail for commissioning an amazing safety campaign and having the nerve not to pull punches. Happy. But mostly tired, with ears ringing – music waaay too loud. Nighty night.

On The Razz

March 30, 2007

Off to the IVCA awards tonight. We generally do well, which always lends a little frisson of anxiety – only one way to go. I got roped into writing l-o-n-g reports for the Effectiveness category. It’s a lose-lose process. If we win, it’s because the film was good. If we lose, it’s because I wrote a rubbish entry. But I’ll know…

Anyway, fingers crossed, tux hired, r&r pass secured.
